Quality Leadership

Over the last three weekends each of our Leadership Boards have met and I am impressed!
On Saturday, April 6th, the elders met for our first annual (with me as pastor) retreat.  We met at the Presbytery office in the beautifully renovated 'Carriage House' of the Scarborough Presbyterian Church.  The history of this beautiful church is fascinating.  It was built by the Vanderbilts as the church for their servants, hence the Carriage House.  The family worshiped elsewhere.  It seems pretty exclusive, but they spared no expense on a unique and elegant church (kind of reminds me of Downton Abbey)!
Even more impressive than the building was the sense of unity and optimism among the elders.  We reflected on the highlights of the last year together and then began to look toward the future God has for us.  I am so pleased to have such a competent, faith-filled and supportive session to build that future with.
Then on Sunday, April 7th, the Trustees held their monthly meeting.  Under the leadership of Ed Brancati they take excellent care of our facilities and our resources.  The latest project is our new storage area in the Community Room which will enable us to organize all storage spaces for the benefit of church and tenants alike.  Living in the manse, Elisabeth and I appreciate the way they make sure things are working well for us.  Just today they sent an electrician to make a couple repairs in our home.
Finally, the deacons held their monthly meeting on Sunday, April 14th.  With Kelly Marlow and Carmen Emery as co-moderators and the Rev. Charles Barton as pastoral liaison they have set a high bar for our ministries of compassion.  They discussed the Caring Cooks ministry, hospital visitation, coffee hour and reviewed details for the last "Life's Tough Decisions" workshop.  I don't think I've ever encountered a more organized and committed group of deacons.
So, I think you can see why I am so optimistic about our future.  With teammates like these, how could I not be?
See you in church,
Pastor Dale

Easter Season

This is Easter Friday already.  I should have written about Easter Sunday earlier, but like the first disciples, I think I walked away from worship a little stunned.  It was an absolutely glorious Easter Day at PCMK (hey that rhymes!).  From the brass prelude, to the liturgical dance with voice, violin and harpsichord; to the hymns and the grand finale, "Hallelujah"--the music was appropriately joyful and worshipful.  The kids loved the hen that laid the Easter eggs and the Scripture lessons from Isaiah and the gospel of John were inspiring.  There is new life because of Easter and we are experiencing it here at PCMK.
It was my first as pastor of this very alive church, and it was everything I hoped it would be, and more.  I felt perhaps more than at any other time that I was truly worshiping and not worrying about what came next in the service.
Now we take this new life into the 50 day season of Easter and beyond.
See you in church,
Pastor Dale
